DAISY INSPIRED FIRST BIRTHDAY PARTY

Choosing a Meaningful Birthday Theme

Our baby girl was born in April and daisies are the flower of the month, making a daisy themed first birthday party the perfect fit. I love that they symbolize childbirth, motherhood, new beginnings and true love, there couldn’t be a flower more perfect to represent all that she is in our lives and all that my journey with her has been.

This baby girl has been the light and purpose to guide us and sustain joy throughout this pandemic. She arrived a few weeks into the first lockdown, our rainbow baby lit up our little world and has continued to do so every day, a reminder that no matter what may happen in the world, miracles still occur as new life arrives on earth daily.

Recyclable Party Decor

I’ve been trying to focus on mostly recyclable decorations to be more eco-friendly and not produce unnecessary waste (although sometimes the kids just really want balloons!), so I made three large paper daisies that we moved to behind Madeline when she was opening presents and then behind the table where she ate her cake. This tutorial was fantastic for making this style of flower out of paper.

The wrapping paper was inspired by a craft for cardboard stamping Georgia found in a book and wanted to try, so we reused some packing paper we received and enjoyed creating together.

Daisy Inspired Party Hats

I made the hats out of yellow card stock, it was so easy to just look up a printable template on the web and cut and glue them together. I used a daisy shaped hole punch and a yellow marker for colouring the centres to create the flowers I glued on to the hats. I folded up all the petals and glued down the centre for each daisy…this took much more time than I expected so I only covered the birthday girl’s hat and then just did a border around the bottom for the rest of the family’s hats. These birthday hats may be my favourite thing I’ve ever made, they’re so cute!

Daisy Themed First Birthday Smash Cake

Icing the daisy cakes without my Mom to help (I always invite her over to participate/take over) was really difficult and took me forever but my main motto when it comes to projects is, “Good enough,” and once I filled the layers with homemade lemon curd, it was absolutely good enough!

Birthday celebrations that connect us to the one we are celebrating are all I ever want. Madeline felt so loved, she adored the baby doll we picked out for (she always steals her sister’s and brother’s) and loved the second hand wooden doll pram so much, she crawled inside, sat on top of her doll, and insisted her siblings motor her around! She decidedly did not like being the centre of attention when we sang her happy birthday and she covered her eyes and cried, oops, but she decidedly did like the cake, very very much!

I’m excited for her to look back at photos of her turning one years from now in our family album, I wonder if she will like the daisy themed birthday party as much as I do!
