Family Things To Do Downtown Calgary
We're always looking for fall family activities to do in Calgary and downtown is one of our favourite places for a weekend adventure. Autumn is so short here that we make sure to take advantage while it lasts, and Prince’s Island Park is one of the best places in the city to enjoy large mature trees with gorgeous fall foliage. Pair that with croissants from The Black Sheep Fine Foods and Patisserie on 17th Ave. and you have yourself a perfect day with the family.
The Best Croissants in Calgary
If you’re headed downtown Calgary for a weekend family adventure, I recommend you stop at The Black Sheep patisserie on 17th Ave for croissants and hot drinks, they're croissants are our favourite in the city (and we’ve tried quite a few), incredibly buttery and French! There are so many flakey layers and they sell original, chocolate, and different seasonal fruit croissants. They’re a feast for the eyes as well as delicious to eat, we are definitely going back for the orange and black pumpkin croissants when it’s closer to Halloween.
We ordered our hot drinks first, grateful for the time and patience the man helping us took to explain the different choices, then he told us which croissants to pair with the different drinks we ordered. His recommendations were absolute perfection!
Enjoying Prince’s Island Park as a Family
Once you’ve gone to the patisserie, head to Calgary's downtown gem, Prince's Island Park. Wander through the east end of the island where there are paths through the wetland and you can find a great view of the classic Centre Street Bridge. After that, head west to enjoy the gardens, the playground, and all of the big old trees with their boughs of fall foliage in the first week of October.
There were so many autumn leaves to enjoy, whether you piling them high, throwing handfuls at one another, or just watching them float down in the wind, dancing their golden way to the ground. It was autumn magic!
The bridge at the centre of Prince's Island Park is currently closed for construction, so start your journey by crossing the Bow River to the island at either the far east or west end for now!
Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts this fall, find a warm rock, close your eyes and enjoy the heat, just like this kid:
